Charging your EV at home is convenient and can save you money, sounds like a win-win to us! Installing a home EV charger gives you control over when you charge your vehicle and for how long, so you can charge overnight and save yourself an early wake up call to the nearest service station.
Save money charging your vehicle during cheaper off-peak hours when electricity prices are at their lowest. Or maybe it’s extra cash you’re after? By renting out your EV charger through Peer-to-Peer (P2P) charging schemes you can even make money - a little bit extra for the Christmas shopping.
Fun fact: Home EV Chargers charge a lot quicker compared to standard public chargers, taking 4 to 6 hours for a full charge using a Level 2 charger (mounted wall chargers that possess around 240 charging volts).
Cost of installing home charger
The average home charging point installation costs £1,000. However, EV owners can apply for an EV charge point grant to save up to £350 of the cost.
Available grant for home charging points
The electric vehicle charge point grant helps plug-in vehicle owners offset up to £350 or 75% (whichever amount is lower) of their home EV charger. To be eligible, you'll need to meet the following criteria:
- You own and live in a flat, or you rent any residential property
- Your home has its own private off-street parking space
- You own an eligible electric vehicle
EV energy tariffs
EV tariffs are specifically designed to be an affordable way for EV owners to charge at home. There are two types of tariffs:
- Two-rate tariffs that offer two different electricity rates depending on the time of day, with much lower rates at night.
- Single-rate tariffs where you pay the same rate throughout the day, but it's often discounted if you have an EV.
Quickfire EV tariffs need to knows
- EV home charging adds hundreds to your energy bill but is a cheaper option than buying petrol or diesel
- You must have a smart meter installed
- Home EV charge points are the fastest option when charging at home
